Like many barbarian warriors, however, they can lack battle-discipline and be over-keen to enter battle against worthy opponents.

They are best used as scouts and in pursuit of fleeing enemies, and ride sturdy, sure-footed ponies with a good turn of speed. Although they were obviously never used on the scale possible in the game, they could be a fairly formidable deterrent to any group of infantry.īarbarian cavalry are lightly armoured and carry spears and shields. They were trained to target horse's hamstrings - or a man's throat- and therefore could be used against either infantry or cavalry. Used occasionally in battle by various nations, these dogs were deliberately starved to make them all the more fierce (and hungry!).

Every warlord worth the name makes sure he has a couple of warbands of these hard men under his command. They are equipped with good axes and small shields. They are not very disciplined at times, as their sense of honour and bravery can make them eager to get into any fray, but they are uniformly superb fighters.

Their presence on a battlefield is always useful, as they have the flexibility to be both archers and infantry and do a good job in both tasks.Īxemen are steadfast and aggressive warriors, the 'infantry of the line' for barbarian warlords. They can, when required, act as light infantry. This equipment means that they can do more than just defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat. They are given the best bows available to their people, and are also equipped with good swords and chainmail armour too. They are all, as might be expected, excellent bowmen, fleet of foot and expert hunters. They are the best archers available to barbarian warlords. They usually form the bulk of Scythian infantry, together with the hardy axemen.Ĭhosen archers are highly prized for their superior skills in war. They alone of the Scythian warriors could launch flaming missiles onto their foes, or provide local missile power to the assaulting axemen. Peasants should be used as an absolute last resort, or in cases where funds are extremely short.įoot archers, while having a longer range than their mounted compatriots, were nevertheless an important part of a Scythian warhost. They are cheap to train, however, and their one advantage is an ability to hide well. Poorly armed and with little military experience, their morale and discipline are both understandably low. The last option of any desperate army (except perhaps slaves or convicts), peasants are good for increasing your numbers.and not much else.
